So pretty sure Matt is getting tired of my big ideas to fix up our yard! Every weekend I have another big idea of how we can improve it. One of these weekends I’m gonna tackle the front yard! It needs a lot of work and our neighbors would probably appreciate it if I would do something with it. Oh well, all my projects lately are in the back yard, because I figure that is where we hang out the most! I mean who sits in their front yard to relax, haha.
This weekends project was to turn this ugly dirt and weed area into a nice little sitting area. We have a little mother in law suite on our house. One of these days when we can afford to start turning the kitchen area in it into a master bath, we’re gonna turn it into our Master bedroom. This area is right outside this room. Matt said are we gonna actually use this area? I told him yes when we have kids and they are sleeping we can escape out here to relax. He’s not a visionary and I just had to keep telling him, “You’ll like it once it’s finished!” He did after we finished and were sitting out there said “This is nice! Much better then before- Good Job!”
This is the area before! All dirt and you just dragged it in with you if you walked out there!!
Since this is a side patio that will be just used for us and not for entertaining really, the plan was to just mulch the whole area so it’s not dirt and mud anymore. A paver patio would be nice (nice and expensive!) if we do that it will be on the other side of our house. We started by pulling up as many of the weeds as we could without going crazy!! We also had to dig out a few of these stupid Palmetto trees that like to spread their seeds and try to grow all over our yard.
My Mom came over to help us go get the mulch and supplies from Home Depot in the truck. We ended up getting 30 bags of mulch, two chairs, a table, weed paper, and edging. After we loaded all that up in the truck and then unloaded it all when we got home, we were ready for the next step.
Supplies!
Matt and I laid the edging down and then I sprayed (well more like drowned) the entire area with weed killer to try and prevent new weeds from trying to grow. Next was to cover the entire area with weed paper.

Area covered- We’re getting there!
Final step was to lay out the mulch and spread it around to cover the entire area. 30 bags seemed like so may when I bought them, but we actually could use maybe 5 more just to cover in some thin areas.

finished!
Final touch was to add our chairs and table

A before and after comparison! It’s not the fanciest patio but it’s 100x’s better the the dirt pile that was there and looks so much better! I still have some other things (lights and table) that I want to add to the area but for now we can enjoy sitting out there when we take Lucky out.
